Windscreen damage from Autumn leaves

Many drivers aren’t aware of the problems that Autumn leaves can cause your car, including your windscreen. And as Autumn is well and truly under way, here at Red Rose Windscreens, we felt that it would be important to share this information. So how exactly can leaves cause damage, and what can you do to prevent it? Well, as Preston’s leading windscreen repair experts, we have produced this guide to windscreen damage from Autumn leaves.

Windscreen damage from Autumn leaves

Autumn leaves are beautiful. Reds, yellows, browns and oranges, the colours perfectly sum up the season. But they can also be a problem. In fact, they cause two particular issues, when wet leaves get stuck to your vehicle, and you don’t remove them instantly. These issues include:

  1. Releasing chemicals that cause discoloration and problems with your paint – As wet leaves stick to your car, they start to decompose. And this process releases a range of chemicals, and causes the leaf to really stick to your paint. The chemicals then leak into your paint work leaving unsightly marks and patches of discolouration. Which can be expensive to resolve!
  2. Sticking to your windscreen- Again, wet leaves will stick also to your windscreen. And this can make it difficult to use the windscreen wipers properly. So if you get caught in a heavy downpour, and your wipers arent working, you could be putting your life at risk. And other people’s lives too. And even if you do remove the leaves, they can leave dark, ugly blotches all over your windscreen, which again can cause obstructions to your vision when driving.

Preventing damage

The best way to prevent any of this damage is by treating Autumn leaves, as you would snow. So remove the leaves before driving away, and always drive carefully over leaves too. You should also remove the leaves as soon as possible, to prevent the decomposition.
